Suitcase Rummage Melbourne

Well Melburnians, we have an announcement to make: Suitcase Rummage Melbourne is moving to the bustling, creative community of Northcote! And not only that but we're switching things up by swapping to a Saturday. For the remainder of 2013 you'll find us every 2nd Saturday of each month at the Northcote Uniting Church Hall on High Street, directly across from the Wesley Anne.

Registrations have opened for the July 13 launch, which will be apart of the fabulous Northern Exposure Festival so we're expecting there to be lots of fun and shenanigans happening in the hood.

We're super excited about releasing this new poster of Brisbane dates for the next half of 2013...

You'll notice something....we're going to be having 2 Rummages a month from August!!!

That's right, we'll be on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month in Reddacliffe Place

Suitcase Rummage Goes To The Coburg Carnival!

SUITCASE RUMMAGE MELBOURNE is super duper excited to be partnering up with Moreland City Council at the annual Coburg Carnival this coming Saturday June 8.

Coburg will come alive with a spectacular array of colour and culture when the Coburg Carnivale brings music and art into the Victoria Street Mall and Sydney Road precinct.

Come for a bargain, a swap, or an old fashioned haggle!

Introducing EmmaDilemma!

Emma O’Dell's ukulele created for Pimp My MUF IV, an exhibition of custom painted ukuleles presented by the Melbourne Ukulele Festival, is one of our winning entries for the Suitcase Rummage People's Choice Award!

A creative mother of two young children and work-at-home drawing, painting, designing, and sewing for EmmaDilemma, Emma combines crafty bloodline and career as a graphic artist with a love of 20th century popular culture and art to create one-of-a-kind Handmade Rock'n'Roll Homewares.

She designs and creates embroidered wedding pillows, art, custom cushions, aprons and accessories, and also recently, painted cigar box guitars. 

Inspired by 1950’s culture, mythology, pin-up, rock‘n’roll, tattoos, Dia de los Muertos, tiki, rockabilly & roots music her wares are made from vintage, recycled materials. Everything is designed, stitched and hand-assembled by Emma so no two items are alike - they are all one-offs!

The Pimp My MUF Suitcase Rummage People's Choice Award Winners!

Congratulations to Kate Kingsmill, Kat Young and Emma O’Dell! Their ukulele art pieces created for Pimp My MUF IV, an exhibition of custom painted ukuleles presented by the Melbourne Ukulele Festival, are the winning entries for the Suitcase Rummage People's Choice Award!

We are very excited that Kate, Kat and Emma will have stalls at Suitcase Rummage. You can check out their winning entries along with other painted, carved, drilled, collaged, sawn up and stuck back together ukes at Art at 1 Spring St gallery on Flinders Lane. A selection of the show will then be installed at The Thornbury Theatre for our May 19 Rummage. More information regarding the annual exhibition can be found here.

But first up we’d love to introduce you to Kate Kingsmill, who will be the first of our winners to host a stall this coming Sunday the 21st at Suitcase Rummage Melbourne.

Introducing - Carla Gardner!

We are very excited to announce that there will be a Tarot Card Reader at our next Suitcase Rummage Melbourne on April the 21st.

Carla Gardner has being reading Tarot for over ten years.
She explains, 'A tarot reading "lays it out ". It puts "your cards (situation) on the table " so you can get  a clearer view and make decisions about it. I also incorporate Doreen Virtue oracle cards  in my readings to provide guidance. A reading can be about career, relationships, or life in general. A one issue reading takes approximately 10 minutes and costs $ 20, two issue readings take about  20 minutes and cost $35, and 3 issue readings go for 30 minutes and cost $50. 
I love doing tarot readings.'

Suitcase Rummage Melbourne runs from 11am until 4pm on Sunday the 21st of April at the Thornbury Theatre. There will be live music by local musicians as well wonderful arts, crafts, recycled and up cycled treasures.

Introducing Rung The Colours!

We'd like to introduce the lovely Zunaira from RUNG THE COLOURS!

RUNG THE COLOURS provides Henna body art for parties and events in Melbourne. 

Henna artist Zunaira Zeeshan is experienced in traditional Pakistani/ Indian, Arabic and in Western tattoo styles. She uses good quality natural Henna.

Zunaira was a hit at our recent pop up Rummage at the Darebin Kite Festival, and  will be hosting a stall at this Sunday's Suitcase Rummage at The Thornbury Theatre in Melbourne.

Melbourne's March Installation Artist

We have a wonderful artist doing the installation for the March Rummage at the Thornbury Theatre, Melbourne. 

Introducing the talented Laura Wood...

Laura Wood is an illustrator currently living in Melbourne, Australia. She has recently completed a Diploma of Illustration and is now proudly represented by Good Illustration Agency. 

Her illustrations are colourful and quirky. She likes to combine digital and traditional dry media to create childlike pictures with a sunny style and a folksy feeling.  She is fascinated by illustrations able to tell a story; an element which she uses within her own work. Laura has a passion for catlike animals, flat shoes and good food. 

For the Thornbury March Rummage, Laura is going to be doing an installation called:

WHAT'S THE MATTER?

"What's the matter?" is an installation diorama created as part of the "Lost in Translation" project for True North Reservoir Arts Festival. 

Laura says "I was invited by Darebin City Council to create a visual piece of work that I developed with the help of mentor Belinda Suzette."

"The work is inspired by the song "North" written by emerging songwriter Auður. 

I believe this visual installation reflects my way of receiving the song, his melody, rhythm and the overall feeling I perceived through the lyrics and music. 

"Using the song as starting point, I've developed the concept in it and translated it in something visual, incorporating my love for narrative, magical sceneries and children's stories."

Welcome to Sanyu - the Rummage Intern!

We'd like to introduce to you our wonderful intern - Sanyu Kiyingi!! We're so excited to have her as a part of Suitcase Rummage. Thank you Sanyu!

Sanyu Kiyingi is a paper engineer and screenprinter from London, currently on a year out from university, to do internships and explore what design is like on an international scale. 

A lot of her work is pattern based and she loves playing with colour.  

When not covered in glue and paint, you can find her wandering around Melbourne looking for street art and art galleries.

She’s been working hard on several projects since she arrived in our lovely city and 

we are pleased to have her doing the art installation for Suitcase Rummage on 17^th February.

Introducing... Kate Campbell Designs

We'd like to introduce the lovely Kate from Kate Campbell Designs!

Kate is a Melbourne based jeweller with a focus on 'reframing the definition of precious'.

"I love taking everyday things and framing them in silver to redefine them in the viewers eyes, from old copper pipe to wood and the inner workings of watches. At the moment I am working on framing knitting/crochet."

Kate did the NMIT Advanced Diploma in Jewellery in 1999/2000 and in the intervening 12 years practised privately, making jewellery for herself and friends. Recently launched through the 'Make Craft Your Business Course' run by the Thornbury Women's Neighbourhood House, Kate Campbell Designs is her first venture into the retail world with her work. 

“I am thoroughly enjoying it, and feel so supported by the women that I met doing the course and keep meeting at markets like Suitcase Rummage. It is a great community and I feel very lucky to be part of it!”

Introducing...Made by Mzungu

The lovely Angela of MADE BY A MZUNGU

Made by a Mzungu creates beautiful resin-covered jewellery pieces - pendants, brooches, earrings, rings, cufflinks, mirror compacts, fridge magnets and framed pieces using postage stamps, photos, vintage wallpaper and fabric.

I've been a "craft dabbler" for a good part of my life and have a great love of colour that is found in nature and everyday life items.  My other great love is travelling and some of my resin jewellery pieces have been influenced by my travels and my passion for Africa.  My creations are unique and no two pieces are exactly the same.  I lay different colour palettes over my photographic pieces and there is no limit to the stamps, wallpaper and fabric that I can use.

I love the whole process of creating my pieces, from choosing the photo, stamp or wallpaper, pouring the resin and then putting the final finishing touch to each individual and unique piece.  I love selling my creations at markets and interacting with my fellow stallholder "creatives" and people coming to the markets.
